Solution
We are making a website that will allow people to see which restaurants are serving fish that are caught sustainably. Our website will also help people find fish that are typically served at restaurants and sold in supermarkets and it will tell you which of those fish are unsustainably caught. The last part of our website will have a reward system depending on if you use our suggestions to make decisions on what fish you are eating. Our community of focus is LA seafood and sushi restaurants.
1/3 of the world’s fisheries are overfished, exhausted or rebounding. A solution to unsustainable fishing practices is hook and lining. It is a great solution because fishermen can release the fish that they accidentally pick up. Another solution is No-take zones. No-take zones are places where fishing is not allowed. No-take zones will help long-term sustainability of fish in the ocean because they will allow fish to reproduce at a higher rate than they are being fished. A third solution is access agreements. These protect people in fishing communities who rely on fish in their region for food, by not allowing richer countries to fish there. In addition to protecting the people, access agreements don’t allow rich countries to use their large fishing fleets to demolish fish stocks and disrupt the food chain.
